"God's Work in Progress"- Making Selection a Prioroty

On this show I discuss the process for helping you to develop the habit of "selecting" people you work with.
This is nothing to do with being haughty or snobbish or elitist. But it has everything to do with working with people with whom you align.

If you send me an e-mail jeff@righteousfreeenterprise.net  I will send you a powerpoint with the key information from the seminar I lead on this topic. The seminar is the beginning of implementing a process for helping to ensure that the people you work with in respects- employees and vendors, "fit" your organization.

The three components of the RIGHT people are:

Competents- they can do their job

Character- they share your values and principles

Chemistry- you like them and want to spend time with them.

All THREE components lead to the right people.

Are you a Pike?- Show date 11/02/2009

Monday's show was great! if you missed it live- www.worldtalkradio.com- "God's Work in Progress"

In this show two key things happened:

I talked about the idea that how we think---DOES determine how we act-  We are teleological which simply means that we move towards what we are pointed at?  If we think things are bad and our outcomes are not going be good, we will naturally, work towards that outcome.  But if we are focussed on what could be and we believe that things will work out for good, we will work towards good.

This is how God made us---- The Book is full of verses supporting this:

"Set you eyes on the things above"----- "Seek first the Kingdom"----"Walk in (or with) the Spirit"

HOPE---- the positive expectation that all things really do work together for GOOD.

I told a little parable and cited a great scientific experiment conducted by Mobias who completely changed the "reality" of a fish---to prove the point.

Dale Kline was our guest-  Real life, business and faith, God and Work- listen to how Dale and his company is God's Work in Progress.......

Your Life's Purpose

Jesus was a carpenter for all but three years of his adult life. His Life's Purpose is to build a church that will seek and save the lost. Those years making excellent structures and furniture were also an expression of his purpose. His focus was on building. When he established his ministry his previousl life was in full view. God doesn't waste anything.

He was NAILED to a piece of wood.

He is at work even today- BUILDING his Church-- (Matt 16)

He calls Apostles, Evangelists, Prophets,Pastors and Teachers, to prepare God's people (you and I), for the work of service as his BODY, and we ultimately "build one another up in Love" Eph 4:16.

He gives us gifts for the purpose of "building" one another and the church-- 1 Cor 14--

So you see your purpose never ends- it is eternal. Click jeff@righteousfreeenterprise.net , if you would like a free tool to help you find yours.

Today's Show - Health Care Crisis?? Monday October 19th, 2009

On today’s program we were all blessed to meet Robert Baldwin the president of CHRISTIAN CARE MINISTRY—AN ORGANIZATION THAT PRACTICES THE PRINCIPLES FOUND IN ACTS CHAPTER 2-  DON’T MISS MY INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER TO THE HEALTHCARE CRISIS IN THIS COUNTRY AND A NON-PROFIT- CHRISTIAN ANSWER AT THAT.  Listen NOW

"God's Work in Progress" on World Talk Radio.

Righteous Free Enterprise- Vision

Hi folks-

Righteous Free Enterprise is what this program is all about- Recently I was asked to articulate it and here it is:

RFE  Purpose-  To "saturate" the "world" with Righteous Free Enterprise

RFE Vision Statement-  To overcome the Kingdom of Greed with the Kingdom of God.

Righteousness- God's will expressed in all of life, especially in the marketplace.

Freedom- unencumbrance-  we think independently therefore we are free. This freedom of thought, is the foundation of all of our freedom-  we think freely, we speak freely and we act freely-

Enterprise- the exchange of goods, services, ideas and information.

A Vivid Description-

I see a world system that is completely overcome and restored to God's plan.  God's plan is a plan that seeks His will in all ways in all parts of life, especially in the marketplace-  The marketplace is the exchange of goods, services, ideas, and information in all forms.  I see a world in which we all know our life's purpose and our lives are empowered by that purpose in our daily activity especially in the marketplace or enterprises of life. Enterprise is more relational than church in a lot respects, especially in frequency. Enterprise will be a forum for excellence and for people to express their purpose fully.  We spend more time, and have more opportunity to impact life within the context of enterprise, than in any other aspect of life. As much as 60% of most people's awake time is spent, at work, in school, out and in the world system. I see a world in which people's life's work, their purpose, (the works God has prepared in advance for us to do) is the only force driving their life, and since this purpose comes from God and is given by God, it should only be used for God. God's plan for the use of our purpose aligns perfectly with his eternal purpose to save the world, and bring the complete joy of the Kingdom to it. I see a world in which transactions in all respects are win-win; that win-lose might occur circumstantially, but never with the intent of causing it.  I see a world in which people build one another up. I see a world where everyone focuses on fulfilling their own potential and never in a way that causes another to fail; where each person is not only concerned with there own interests, but also in the interests of others.  The Church is the main catalyst for God's plan to be brought to its fulfillment- Eph 4: 11-16 is the blueprint for the church's role.

In Righteouse Free Enterprise all power: intellectual, physical, economic, etc is empowering.

"God's Work in Progress"- Living Life on Purpose

Note:  If you want the free work-sheet to help you determine your Life's Purpose- click here and send me an e-mail, I'll get it to you.

"God's Work In Progress"
Do you have a life's purpose? Do you know that you were created with a purpose? That you were create ON purpose? Your purpose is your "life's work" it is meant to be the over-arching, guiding force that leads you in the work you do, the jobs you work in, and the excellence you achieve. It is vital and lifegiving and it imperative that you find and fulfill it. It is NOT a job, as purpose is expressed through a job. But it is a "job" so big it will take a lifetime to do.
A Life's Work.
And I have found the way.

Your purpose is NOT a secret. God intends for you to live it. What a mean terrible God we would serve if he wanted to keep His purpose and plan for your life from you? This very idea of keeping your purpose a secret, opposes EVERY attribute about a Good God who "reveals all things." So with this fact in mind let me assist you in the pursuit and identification of living a life of His purpose.

First let me re-state that God has a purpose for your life, a reason you exist. But you ask: How can God have a purpose for my life? Me? He had one for Jesus and Jesus is the model for us all to follow as a human being. Jesus said he came not to condemn the world but to SAVE it. He quoted Isaiah 61 in the synagogue to specifically tell us how that purpose would be fulfilled. Our Opposer has a purpose to "steal, kill and destroy". (John 10:10). Paul was a purposeful person (do a word search of purpose and see how many times it comes up), also Moses, (let my people go) as were Billy Graham and Mother Teresa, and Jeff Pelletier. So are you. Rick Warren wrote an entire book about the importance of living a "Purpose Driven Life". This is key because your real purpose will drive your life and is meant to do so.

I am writing this to tell you that your purpose is alive and real if you are willing to do the work of grasping it. And I'm going to give you what I have found to be the "secret" to finding it. God has made it known to you already- at least he's given you the equation and process to determine it.

Here is the mind-blower: Jesus said : Then enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, but I have come to give eternal life!.

So right here, we see, you see, that Jesus has a purpose and Satan has a purpose.
One of the key words for Satan in the Bible is Diabolos. It means to cast apart or split. Couple this with his main weapon - deception- (the father of lies), and you can begin to understand how this enemy would NOT want anyone to know their life's purpose. He KNOWS what the world would be like if every one lived according to their life's purpose. He has been stealing killing and destroying it!

But Jesus has come to give us eternal life!! A life that is eternal, a way of life that is perpetually abundant and more importantly truly effective. An ALIVE life.

Two passages are important here as to why God would want to reveal his purpose for your life:

Rom 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,a whob have been called according to his purpose.

Eph 2:10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

In the passage from Romans you can see that there is benefit to you. The point is that it is good for you to understand God's purpose for your life- that all things in your life work together, for GOOD, when you love God and you have been called according to his purpose for your life. Good means beneficial, profitable, of value, also generous. So loving God and hearing, so as to respond to the "call" of His purpose is beneficial to you, it is Good for you. Because even when you come upon dry times or difficulties, or what appear to be setbacks, you will always have your purpose to guide you to the next task or job. (In my own life, I even had joy during a season of unemployment because my purpose kept me on track, and many times, very well meaning people gave advice to the contrary but I did not waver.) Know this: God's purpose will lead you into all that is good for your life, over time. This brings us to the second passage.

The Ephesians 2:10 verse- You and I are God's workmanship, his created work, which begins at your conception as the DNA join together to begin your life. Your natural gifts and talents are there at that moment. God created you and set a purpose and plan for your life. He has ordained a "life's work" for you based on these talents and aptitude he has provided you and something else I will also discuss in a moment. And I hope you can see that the work God has for you to do is part of HIS plan and purpose for the world------- !! Why else would he take the time?

God's purpose- your life.

So how do you find your purpose? It is simpler than you ever thought . It is just as plain as day. But you are being deceived about this purpose because you have an adversary who knows all to well, what the world would be like if everyone found and lived God's purpose for their lives. So don't be surprised if you have to "press in" to God to finally understand it.

The mystery is now revealed:

Your purpose is the SUM of two things:

1. That genetic skill which you do really well, (your talents and gifts- organize, encourage, speak, build, create, solve) and,

2. Your passion- that issue or principle or moral or cause or mountain, that you really care about.
When these two things become ONE, a purpose is born and your life begins to take on a seriousness and your work produces a joy that gives life real meaning. When I work with people and they discover their purpose, (yes it is already there), many cry.

Most people think what they do is their purpose. This is a half truth- When what you do well is married to what you truly care about, your have impact and significance that is intrinsic, permanent and directional. And...... you will improve the world.

I will need to write more of this but let me end this post with this process of understanding of how to determine your purpose.

YOUR PURPOSE IS

THE MARRIAGE OF THESE TWO

REMEMBER IN A MARRIAGE--

TWO BECOME ONE

What are you really good at? (skills)       What are you Passionate about?

What have you been complimented for?  What do you care deeply about?
What have been successful at in life?       What cause lights you up?
What comes naturally?                            What is your moral imperative?

Take a moment right now and go online-- or if you have bible software or a concordance, look up purpose and check out how often and how it is used on the Bible.

I pray that it informs and encourages you to pursue your purpose- your life's work-  that body of good works that God has prepared in advance for your to do.

These works can ONLY be done you, in the sense that whomever they are desigend to impact, are people who are or who will be in YOUR life, and no one elses's.

Peace.

The Law and the Profits?

Jesus was asked:

34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: ”‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ a 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ b 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

These words of Jesus speak to me regarding how I operate my business. Jesus, here, applies them universally, not situationally. These two truths are the foundation for the rest!

The first one, Love God is the essence of the first four commandments of the ten.

The second, Love your neighbor, is the essence of the other six.

And the entire rest of the Bible is based on the 10 commandments.

Since this is true it must also be true that the LAW- our laws must be based on them also.

And, our Profits, must be as well.

Righteous Free Enterprise- the struggle

The struggle is that we are up against it. We who propose to work in the marketplace (which is the free exchange of ideas and goods), and do it for Jesus, are up against opposition. Our Opposer is against Jesus and those things that Jesus stands on and for. His weapons are fear, deceit and he preys on our worries and concerns, "leveraging" them to get us to fall away from THE Way.

It works a lot, doesn't it.

But I'm here to tell you and me, that the JOY of the Lord is our strength!

Seek and focus on the OUTCOMES of the Way- Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.

Put down the things of the world, lift your eyes to the things above, focus on, look at, hold, Christ.

In this way you are in the world and not OF it, and more importantly you are a force to be reckoned with! And you will take back the kingdom of Greed , for the KING.

Go in peace.

Enter the Discussion

It's time.

It is time to claim some ground for God.

We each are born free. We have certain inalienable rights- not given by man but by God- which descend or cascade out of our freedom. We rightly form governments with the sole purpose of protecting these rights. But if freedom is not willingly (as opposed to willfully) submitted to the highest possible Good, then freedom is of less and less value. Freedom without righteousness is anarchy. Righteousness without freedom is legalism. Freedom, which is willingly submitted to the greater Good, is empowered, meaningful and significant.

Enterprise, creating a business or working in one, in the buying and selling of goods and services, is an expression of our inalienable freedom. It is also a way to fulfill our obligation to God who created us to work.

As a business or organizational leader or member of an organization- as a Christian- you and I have this moral imperative. We are free- yet- our freedom only works effectively when it is voluntarily submitted (that is freely) to the principles and practices of the Kingdom of God. One of the ways we are to submit ourselves to God is in our daily work.

What I hope to accomplish is to, with you, determine a paradigm and the subsequent practices that flow out of the principles of the Kingdom regarding our work and money- and then form a BODY of business and organizational leaders who are dedicated and willing to take back, the Kingdom of Greed, for Christ.

You can start by reading these posts, and commenting on them- reading other's comments and commenting on them.

I have been making it my task to pursue the overcoming of the Kingdom of Greed and now seek to enlist others. I have learned a great deal and believe others have too. Maybe can share this knowledge and build and strengthen one another and knit this Kingdom together for GOOD.

Righteous Free Enterprise-- FREE

Unrestricted trade that has the ten commandments etc as its foundation is the foundation of righteous free enterprise. Over the last 100 years, we have seen an ever increasing attempt to enforce "fairness" on our economic systems. By means of legislation and government fiat we have been attempting to manufacture righteousness in the marketplace. It is failing. Laws, by and large, do not dictate how people behave. Morality does. And righteous, just, moral principles are the answer.

An immoral free enterprise system will not be free for long. Ours is slowly being eaten alive by a well-meaning (for the most part) goverment that seeks to make the system righteous or fair. It cannot and it will not succeed. Proof? The over 300,000 federal laws are proof.

The FREE market is the answer but the free market participants must be "self-governing" submitted to a set of enduring principles that when applied, result in a righteous, fair, just, economic system.

Companies and organizations who have submitted themselves to a higher" law, find themselves truly successful and effective, and.... joyful

Rights?? Righteous Free Enterprise

Rights?? Righteous Free Enterprise
Where do our rights come from? What is a right? A Right is that which is authorized by God by means of His permission or creation. In the big picture we have absolute freedom of thought. There is no limitation on what we can think or imagine, except that which we impose on ourselves. This freedom of thought gives us, by extension other freedoms. Because we freely think we have the freedom to express those thoughts as speech or with the press, or through assembly or worship- these RIGHTS are given to us by the God who gave us freedom of thought as part His creation. Therefore they are inalienable, they cannot be be alienated or made foreign to us, for they are natural to us as given by God.God has also given us authority. We have authority over the land and sea and all that is on it or in it. This authority brings with it, an obligation to preserve the land and the sea. This Authority as given by God is from the word Exousia- The word is comprised of the preposition EX—out of or out from, and Ousia, - Being (A present active participle of the verb to be.) The word translated authority means OUT-FROM BEING, or BEING OUT-FROM. So the great I AM (from the verb to be) gives us authority "out from" Himself. This fact makes GOD the sole source of Authority- Jesus said ALL authority has been given to me…… Matt 28. This authority is where our "rights" come from, and in other words, because we have authority we have, by extension, certain (particular) rights. For example:God has given you and I authority (the keys to the Kingdom) to storm the gates of hell. Does that mean we have the RIGHT? I believe it does.He gives us authority to be ambassadors for the Kingdom. Does that mean we have that "right"? Yes I believe it does since by His authority we "represent" the King.He placed man (kind) in the garden “to work” and he gave man (kind) “permission” to partake of the fruit of his labor. This is the right to possessions and their stewardship. .The Modernist Liberal view has been that rights are endowed by mankind and then administered by the state. If this is true than the state can take them away, a scary thought to me.The Biblical view is that there are certain (particular) rights that are inalienable, and cannot be taken from us, except by God, which are, right to Life, to be Free to choose, and the right to pursue happiness, (or felicity, benefit, -all of these would have been understood as happiness in the 18th century.) Our Bill of Rights contains these principles at its core as our Founders, Madison specifically, were steeped in the Bible- Mlost were graduates of Harvard or Yale, both Divinity schools at the time.A Classic Liberal believes the latter, that we are essentially (in essence) FREE, – it is for freedom Christ made us free- and those of us who understand this, form governments to protect our freedom and our inalienable rights. If one does not think that there are certain inalienable rights, and subscribes to the former view above, then the question becomes who decides? If it is the State, the state could as easily give us the right to marry our siblings, as it could limit our speech only to certain words. And where does the wisdom come from that tells those running the State what our rights are or should be?Unless we recognize that there are certain principles (particular ones) that should always BE, and have always BEEN, we are doomed to degrade into evil. Our inalienable rights are examples of things that have always been. It is inevitable that we degrade into evil if we don't understand this idea..What say you?

If not Us, Who?

What is the driving force in the vast majority of businesses? What is the actual motivator?

The answer is Greed. Greed is the primary motive of the "world" system.

As Christians, followers of Christ, we are motivated to SAVE this "world system", what the Bible calls the Cosmos. The material world. We do this by acting intentionally, by basing our business behavior of a purpose that is not GREED based.

What is GREED? Greed is sole self-interest. This is a form of evil, and you can see how acting in one's own sole self-interest is a form of idolatry, of self worship.

There are many successful business and organizational leaders, some of whom lead Christian organizations, who lead this way.

While acting in your self interest is not wrong, acting SOLELY in your own interest is.

Phil 2:3
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4, Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others

Phil 2:21
For everyone looks out for his own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

And if you really want to understand this idea fully, read the entire chapter 2 of Paul's letter to the Phillipians and you will see ANTI-GREED.

So the defining aspect of character of a Chrisitan is that he\she is in "it" for the interests of Christ, which includes ones own interests, and the interests of others.

The question for you as a business owner, operator, executive, is "what are you in it for"?

Christian Business?

Recently I was having a discussion concerning whether a business can be called a "Christian Business". My take on this idea is it depends on what you mean? If you are referring to a business that is operated by the principles outlined in the Bible that is one thing. An Atheist can operate by those principles and many do, but they don't say they operate a Christian Business.

You could also say that you are a Christian and follow Christ in the operation of your business, and seek to find and do his will in your business. In that case I would say you are Christian operating your business, so are a Christian businessperson.

What is clear to me is that a business is not a person, and cannot follow Christ. The people who operate the business can be Christians, (Christ followers) and operate the business aligned with their understanding of the will of Christ.

The business principles found in the Bible are followed all over this country and are also the basis for our laws, and ethics but I would not call this a Christian Nation either, for the same reason- the government is not a follower of Christ.

So I would say there is no such thing as a Christian Business.

One of my favorite quotes attributed to St Augustine is that he was confronted as why he chose to buy his sandals from an unbeliever when there were believers who also made sandals. His answer reported to be: "Because he makes the best sandals!!!"

The Profit Motive- Righteous Free Enterprise

The "profit motive" is most often cited as the reason for the success of the Capitalist system. In fact, this is true. Profit, wealth, is the goal of capitalism. It is also the goal of Righteous Free Enterprise. But the word is measured and defined differently in Righteous Free Enterprise. In Capitalism, the goal is profit, which is then invested to make more profit and then becomes wealth (stored economic power). The goal in this purely secular approach is more. More is the goal.

Profit in Righteous Free Enterprise isn't merely about the money. Of course money is a measure of an effective business. But to be Righteous, the pursuit of money cannot be the goal. Jesus himself said in Luke's Gospel in Chapter 6:24 “But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort. and Paul is specific when he says that the LOVE of money is the root of all kinds of evil. (1Tim 6:10).

The Holy Bible : New International Version. 1996, c1984 (Luke 6:24). Grand Rapids: Zondervan.

So if money or wealth is the goal of your business don't be surprised if you aren't happy now and that your reward in heaven is far less than you expect or hope.

Money is power. The purpose of power is empowerment. The profit of the Kingdom comes from advancing the Kingdom, if you use your wealth to advance and edify yourself and one-another, and truly advance the rule of God (the Kingdom) in your life and the world, you will be doing the Lord's work.

You must have money to do this, so making it, and lots of it, is not a bad thing. That money is not the goal, that true profit, which comes from the word GOOD, is, a great thing. (More on profit later.)

Do the Lord's work.

A Message from the Arena

It's one thing to write about Righteous Free Enterprise, and another thing to live it.

Here's a testimony you might find informative and instructive.

God is making clear to me that lying and stealing are lying and stealing no matter if your 7 or 47. Lying to make strides in business is tainting the business and He will hold us accountable for those lies just like any other lies. I see at my current employer that lying and stealing to get ahead is permissible and acceptable. Adults who know better, bless the lies and the stealing if the result is some financial gain. The trap or the deception is that because lies and stealing produce some “fruit” it is okay to do. The blanket of deception gets thrown over the actions and people move on disregarding any idea that what they did was wrong.

Working in that kind of environment is very difficult. I respond one of two ways. I am either critical and judgmental, or I engage in self pity. Neither response is particularly helpful. My associates dislike both, especially the judgmental one, and I hate the way I fell when I engage in either one. Yet, I hate being taken advantage of as well. I have not been able to influence others behavior with either response. Things are even more difficult for me when I see someone gaining financially because of either their lying or stealing, and I do not gain when I try not to engage in those behaviors. The spiritual gain seems fleeting at the moment when I am trying to make my goal. Money talks in this world. To place myself in a spiritual world during those moments is hard for me to do.

Don’t get me wrong, I am tempted to engage in deceptive practices, and at times I have. I try to see how much I can get away with without anyone complaining, and without taking any big chunks out of people. Oh what a slippery slope. And because prices are sometimes negotiable, practicing honest and fair business decisions is elusive. I can overcharge one person to compensate for undercharging another. I would hate to be the one that was overcharged. Should there be some fairness and guidelines by which to determine prices for people. Is it okay for me to take advantage of one customer because they are willing to pay the price and another is not? Boy, talk about customer beware.

How much right does a business owner have to engage in behavior that would encourage the customer to be leery of their purchasing from that business? Why do businesses promote the customer beware factor? Why aren't businesses just honest and forthright? When I have a customer, I'd like to think that they know they can trust me. Yet, I would still try to get the most for my merchandise as possible. I would rather the benefit go to me than the customer. So complicated. I wish we had stricter rules about selling. I have to go now. Thanks for reading.

Mary

Here is a principle for you: you can "rent" a person's hands and legs and back to do work, but they have to "give" you their head( mind) and their heart (passion).

Do you think this testimony proves the point?

The Seed of Righteous Free Enterprise- In America

Gov. William Bradford

Pilgrims Beat 'Communism' With Free Market
by Michael Franc writes for the Heritage Foundation. (Click here to see all his great stuff)

Recalling the story of the Pilgrims is a Thanksgiving tradition, but do you know the real story behind their triumph over hunger and poverty at Plymouth Colony nearly four centuries ago? Their salvation stemmed not so much from the charitable gestures of local Indians, but from their courageous decision to embrace the free-market principle of private property ownership a century and a half before Adam Smith wrote The Wealth of Nations.Writing in his diary of the dire economic straits and self-destructive behavior that consumed his fellow Puritans shortly after their arrival, Governor William Bradford painted a picture of destitute settlers selling their clothes and bed coverings for food while others “became servants to the Indians,” cutting wood and fetching water in exchange for “a capful of corn.” The most desperate among them starved, with Bradford recounting how one settler, in gathering shellfish along the shore, “was so weak … he stuck fast in the mud and was found dead in the place.”The colony’s leaders identified the source of their problem as a particularly vile form of what Bradford called “communism.” Property in Plymouth Colony, he observed, was communally owned and cultivated. This system (“taking away of property and bringing [it] into a commonwealth”) bred “confusion and discontent” and “retarded much employment that would have been to [the settlers’] benefit and comfort.”Brink of ExterminationThe most able and fit young men in Plymouth thought it an “injustice” that they were paid the same as those “not able to do a quarter the other could.” Women, meanwhile, viewed the communal chores they were required to perform for others as a form of “slavery.”On the brink of extermination, the Colony’s leaders changed course and allotted a parcel of land to each settler, hoping the private ownership of farmland would encourage self-sufficiency and lead to the cultivation of more corn and other foodstuffs. As Adam Smith would have predicted, this new system worked famously. “This had very good success,” Bradford reported, “for it made all hands very industrious.” In fact, “much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been” and productivity increased. “Women,” for example, “went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn.”The famine that nearly wiped out the Pilgrims in 1623 gave way to a period of agricultural abundance that enabled the Massachusetts settlers to set down permanent roots in the New World, prosper, and play an indispensable role in the ultimate success of the American experiment.A profoundly religious man, Bradford saw the hand of God in the Pilgrims’ economic recovery. Their success, he observed, “may well evince the vanity of that conceit...that the taking away of property... would make [men] happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God.” Bradford surmised, “God in his wisdom saw another course fitter for them.”

Jeff says- Govenor Bradford rediscovered the principle laid-out by God in Genesis. We are free to partake of the fruit of our labor. God requires us to work, and because he is JUST, allows us to keep what we produce.

The Original Model for Business and Enterprise

Hi,

Most people don't know that the model for conducting trade, which is another word for enterprise, was created by the God of the Universe, the God of Abraham, in the Garden of Eden, at or near the beginning of TIME itself.

The next posts will provide for you an understanding of how this occurred and why it is important. We will also discuss over time why doing it God's way is Right, Good, Profitable, and most of all SAFE.

So I hope you come back and visit and think about what you read here, and I hope you enter into real dialogue about WHAT enterprise is, why it exists , how BEST to conduct it . I call it

Righteous Free Enterprise©

I have another blog: http://www.becominggreat.com/ which will take you to the next step of IMPLEMENTING principles that lead to JOY in your workplace.

Righteous Free Enterprise- The Key Components

The Components of Righteous Free Enterprise -

In my consulting work with you I will focus on HOW we do this, because it is in the HOW that results are achieved. Since you will profit well from them, I will profit from teaching and empowering you. (The worker is worth his wages.)

Righteous Free Enterprise is God’s plan for business and all organizations, including churches. But as a pastor, business owner or operator what does it look like? How does Righteous Free Enterprise work?

Let me define it for you.

First, in all you do, let your faith and belief in God INFORM your behavior. This “letting” is submission. When you submit your business to God, you are “letting” Him. This is true in your person as well. Your character and person is shaped and formed (or transformed) to the degree you “let” God.

Righteous Free Enterprise begins with

A Core Purpose. - Why does your business or organization exist? How is the world better because your business exists? How would it be worse if your business didn’t exist? What is your business or organization really really good at? How does this “competence” impact the world? What are you passionate about? These are the type of questions that the answers to will lead to defining and articulating your company’s Core Purpose. This purpose will also become or lead to your “Value Proposition” which is what you’re “REALLY SELLING”.
Bill Bright's Core Purpose at Campus Crusade- To know Christ and make Him known

CORE VALUES: what do you as the business owner really believe about how you do business. What morals, principles, values, beliefs, tenets, do you base YOUR decisions on? There are between 3-6 core beliefs or principles that you will not compromise. You need to identify and articulate them. They must be REAL not “hoped for”. You can shoot for the ideals you hope for, but begin with what is TRUE. Be authentic. Your employees or associates will love you for it, even if they don’t agree. And, you will be telling the truth which has a great deal of power. (There are ways of expressing what may be a negative value-like being bossy or a control freak- that communicate authenticity without sounding negative.) But long term you will set your mind on the things above, and you will cultivate the fruit of the Spirit. But you must begin, where you are.

The RIGHT PEOPLE: Next, begin to build your organism. Organization is how you utilize functions and talents. That comes later. Begin to build your BODY of people. There is a specific process for doing this well. It is called the Selection Process. Ultimately you want your people to align with the purpose and values of your organization. Matching their character to your values is an absolute key. If they align with your purpose you will be amazed at how they “fit” and “knit” together with you. Selecting the RIGHT people is the key to a high performance organization. This is the NUMBER one mistake leaders make in building their organism or Body. They hire based on what the person can DO, more than WHO the person is. Both competence (what they know and can do) and character (who they are as people) are important. And if you look at the Pastoral Letters in the NT, you will see clearly that character is more important. Jesus selected the 12 and they had NO idea how to minister. He TAUGHT them. And he stayed up all night praying about those decisions.

Specific Expectation and Outcomes-

Your organization and the BODY need to have well defined outcomes that are clear, concise and beneficial to your core purpose. Ideally these outcomes should DESCEND out of your VISION, but you may not have that determined yet, and that is ok. Your purpose will dictate to a very large extent the OUTCOMES you need to accomplish. Primarily your JOB DESCRIPTIONS should be outcome based NOT tactics or procedural. Each job should have a purpose that helps fulfill your CORE purpose, otherwise why does it exist? The RIGHT people will want you to give them a “RESPONSIBILITY” and then let them bring their talent, skill and good character to bringing that responsibility about. Lesser people will need direction. The RIGHT people will need a diminishing amount over time.

CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVING BEST PRACTICES-

This where the idea of LEAN comes in. The three OUTCOMES of LEAN are Faster, Better, Cheaper. With the RIGHT people LEAN will HAPPEN. But you can kill it if you don’t measure well, and have a productive feedback loop. If you blame people instead of focusing on solutions you will lose good people and you will not be successful. Six Sigma is a great process. It puts the focus where it needs to be, on IT, not who. The 5 WHYS are a great way to engender responsibility. VALUES drive this. Alignment with Values produces disciplined behavior.

VISION-

If you wear glasses, take them off right now and notice how out of focus the world is. When your VISION is good you can really SEE clearly can’t you? This is TRUE. The clearer, the more detailed your END STATE description is, the more likely you are to achieve it.

Here is what SONY said about it’s end state back in1954, just 8 years after having their butts kicked in WW II:

SONY's VISION - 1954

Core Purpose- To experience the sheer joy of innovation and the application of technology for the benefit and pleasure of the general public.
Elevation of the Japanese national culture and status.
Being a pioneer—not following others, but doing the impossible.
Respect and encouragement of individual ability and creativity.
Become the company most known for changing the worldwide image of Japanese products as being of poor quality.

Clarity
We will create products that become pervasive around the world. … We will be the first Japanese company to go into the American market and distribute directly. … We will succeed with innovations like the transistor radio that American companies have failed at. … Fifty years from now, our brand name will be as well known as any on Earth. … and will signify innovation and quality that rivals the most innovative companies anywhere. … “Made in Japan” will mean something fine, not shoddy.

My Take- It’s really difficult to miss the point with a Vision like that and guess what, they accomplished it!!! You may have a vision right now. Or, you may construct it with your people. But how you obtain it, is not the issue. THAT you obtain it will determine HOW YOU CHANGE THE WORLD.

My vision is to bring forth Righteous Free Enterprise. My passion is to help you!

An Interesting Quote

“When the virtues proper to moral liberty weaken, so does the vitality of economic and political liberty. The cardinal virtues of honesty, courage, practical realism and self-control -- temperance -- are indispensable in democracy and a dynamic, creative economy.”- Michael Novak, Theologian and Free Market Proponent from an interview in WASHINGTON, D.C., MAY 11, 2005 (Zenit.org).-

A KINGDOM WORK

Since Righteouse Free Enterprise is given to us by God it is a Kingdom Work. That is, along with the whole of creation, work is an integral part of the Creation. We are to "work and "keep" that which God has given us to do. This is how we "make" our living, by doing that which God has given our hands to do.

And we don't just give our hands and backs and legs to the task, we give our might.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 is translated: To the degree your hands discover, make or do, as to your ability or power.

We are commanded here to bring the fullness of our ability to the tasks that we discover needing to be done. In this way we glorify God, who gives us work and the ability to do it.

And we also have the right to participate in and receive the FRUIT (produce, profit) that our labor produces. (This is the case for private property as well, which as you can also tell is really "on loan" from God.)

God rules and reigns over our work as both the provider of it, and the one giving us the talent and skill to do it.

This is why it says, "he who will not work, shall not eat.".

Finding Righteous People?

This a huge topic and I will be writing a lot about it. But here are some beginning comments:

  • First, know thyself. Determine why you're in business. Why does your busineess exist? How is the world a better place because your business is active and present in it? How would it be worse if your business stopped functioning? Express this succinctly, with the following format- to:_____________________________________________.
  • Next, what drives your decision-making in your business. What are the non-negotiable beliefs, morals, principles, that you hold earnestly and that which you would be hard-pressed or unwilling to ever compromise? These are the values of your organization. Don't kid yourself here, and don't make the mistake 90% of leaders make: identify the the values you want not the values you actually hold. This is key. Identify your real values.
  • Once you know these two foundational pillars of your company, you are well on your way. The next step is to find competent people, who already agree with these.
  • How do you determine if they are "righteous " people ?

This is something I can help you with. For more, go here:

What the Bible Says About Work-

The following is taken from http://www.wooddaleatwork.org/ a work ministry at Wooddale Church of Edina, MN. If you ever had any doubt about the integration of your faith and your work-life, this should relieve that doubt.

There Is An Inheritance and Reward for Being Faithful to Our Work

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. Col 3:23-24 (NKJV)
Biblical Insights on Work

New Testament
Of Jesus’ 132 public appearances in the NT, 122 were in the marketplace / workplace.
Of 52 parables Jesus told, 45 had a workplace context. Of 40 divine interventions recorded in Acts, 39 were in the marketplace / workplace.

Jesus spent his adult life as a carpenter until age 30 before he went into a preaching ministry in the workplace. Jesus called 12 workplace individuals, not clergy, to build His church.

Work is Worship - The Hebrew word "Avodah" is the root for the word from which we get the words work and worship.

Work in its different forms is mentioned more than 800 times in the Bible, more than all the words used to express worship, music, praise, and singing combined.

“54% of Jesus’ reported teaching ministry arose out of issues posed by others” in the scope of daily life experience. – Lewis and Lewis, LICC

What the Bible Says about Work

The First Man in the Bible Described as being filled with the Spirit of God was a Craftsman.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 "And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, 4 "to design artistic works, to work in gold, in silver, in bronze, 5 "in cutting jewels for setting, in carving wood, and to work in all manner of workmanship. 6 "And I, indeed I, have appointed with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and I have put wisdom in the hearts of all who are gifted artisans, that they may make all that I have commanded you: 7 "the tabernacle of meeting, the ark of the Testimony and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furniture of the tabernacle-- 8 "the table and its utensils, the pure gold lampstand with all its utensils, the altar of incense, 9 "the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base-- 10 "the garments of ministry, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, to minister as priests, 11 "and the anointing oil and sweet incense for the holy place. God Establishes Our Work
Let Your work appear to Your servants, And Your glory to their children. 17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us, And establish the work of our hands for us; Yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalms 90:16-17 (NKJV)

There Is a Time For Every Work
I said in my heart, "God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, For there is a time there for every purpose and for every work." Eccl 3:17 (NKJV)

We Are to Find Satisfaction in Our Labor
Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. Eccl 2:24 (NKJV)

Our Labor is a Gift of God
I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives, 13 and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor--it is the gift of God. Eccl 3:12-13 (NKJV)

Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage. 19 As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor--this is the gift of God. 20 For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart. Eccl 5:18-20 (NKJV)

Labor Alone Will Not Satisfy the Cry of the Soul
All the labor of man is for his mouth, And yet the soul is not satisfied. Eccl 6:7 (NKJV)

Jesus Had a Work to Do
"I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." 6 John 9:4-6 (NKJV)

Jesus Had a Work to Do that Brought Glory to the Father
"I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. John 17:4 (NKJV)

Jesus Came to Help Us with the Burden of Labor
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." Matt 11:28-30 (NKJV)

God Calls Us to Examine Our Work
For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. 5 For each one shall bear his own load. Gal 6:3-5 (NKJV)

Our Labor in the Lord is Not in Vain
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Cor 15:58 (NKJV)

Our Labor Is Designed to Allow Us to Help Meet Other’s Needs
Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Eph 4:28 (NKJV)

God Calls Us to Work in Order to Provide for Our Families
For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. 2 Thess 3:10-12 (NKJV)

We Were Created to do Good Works
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Eph 2:10 (NKJV)

There Is A Reward for Doing Our Work Well
"And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work." Rev 22:12 (NKJV)

Our Work is a Ministry through Our Gifts and Calling
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15 but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Eph 4:11-16 (NKJV)

All that We Do Is a Ministry Unto the Lord – Including Our Work
Let every detail in your lives— words, actions, whatever— be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way. Col 3:17 (Message)

And lastly I would add that we are created TO WORK-
Gen 2: 15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.”

Righteouse Free Enterprise- More About Freedom

Freedom without the Law is anarchy.

The Law without Freedom is tyranny.

Therein lies the paradox of Righteous Free Enterprise and of our Representative Republic. We are, completely free. Yet, without restraint, our freedom eventually leads to our destruction. But how do we restrain it? This restraint needs to come from our free choice. If it is imposed upon us externally, it is tyranny.

This "imposed" restraint is the idea behind present-day liberalism and to some on the Religous Far Right. There are those who see the need for order in our midst and they have decided that THEY should be the ones to bring it......on everyone else. As you read on you see why this is a stupid idea.

As I said before the best restraint is SELF-RESTRAINT. This self restraint, or "self government" as James Madison put it is based on our understanding of our "fallen nature". We lack, we are imperfect, we cannot attain that which we can envision on our own. We need help. This points to the deception implied in Secular Humanism. Man is Good- NOT. Man may intend to be good, but we cannot be good on our own. We can do good things, but our essential nature, apart from God is to stumble, and fall, eventually and repeatedly. We fall short.

This is why the best use of our freedom is to choose self-government which is also called self-discipline based on a commitment to a higher Law. Doing so, as Madison points out is the key to preserving the Country and in my view to fulfilling our potential. It is paradoxical that our willingness to FREELY place our freedom under the "governance" of the exact same God who freely gives it, is the essential task of a Human-kind. But it is the truth.

We are given freedom by God, who then ASKS us (God is the ultimate gentleman) to freely place that freedom under his WISDOM, and HE will guide our steps down the path that He has laid out beforehand.

AMAZING!

Righteous Free Enterprise VS. Capitalism

Let me be succinct about the difference here. Capitalism is about the creation of wealth. Wealth may very well be the outcome of Righteous Free Enterprise although it need not be. Wealth as you'll recall from my post- "What is the Purpose of Money?", is stored economic power, and the main purpose of power is "empowerment". In that context, wealth has a purpose. So while Capitalism is the creation of wealth, when wealth exists or is created for it's own sake it violates another tenet of RFP, which is: each person should act in their own best (highest possible) interest. Hoarding wealth, or the creation of it for its own sake, falls very far short of acting in your highest possible interest. If we think about our BEST interest we logical think beyond just our own interest.

There is a great misunderstanding regarding the difference between the "intended" Righteous Free Enterprise and the "man-made" Capitalism. They are by no means synonymous.

Righteous Free Enterprise- Righteouseness

Righteousness

To discuss Righteous Free Enterprise as God’s plan for business and organizations, we had better, at some point, try to get a grasp of Righteousness. This posting will not be exhaustive because the subject is so vast, it will take much space here and elsewhere to gain a full grasp of it.

To begin, righteousness can be seen as both behavior and character. God IS Righteous, God ACTS righteously.

If you are a Christian the above applies to you as well. If you are not, you can act righteously, but not BE righteous. In the movie Forrest Gump the character states, “Stupid is as stupid does.” This is not the case with Righteousness. Although we all are capable of righteous acts, only Christians are capable of BEING righteous, and even they cannot claim any of their own effort in attaining that status. And Christianity has almost “cornered the market” of theology ( understanding God) in this idea of RIGHTEOUSNESS.

But I digress.

Let’s begin by beginning to define Righteousness- (If you have thoughts on this subject please click on the comment link and join the discussion.)

Righteousness is perfectly RIGHT, without error, without flaw, perfectly JUST, complete, full, no mistakes, no errors, and the only absolute of all that we consider Just and Fair.

On the small scale it means doing the right thing, or act. On an even smaller scale it means doing a “good thing”.

In our businesses and organizations, we should begin there. We should as leaders, aim at doing the “right” thing in all circumstances, and in doing Good, when we see the opportunity. In the post about Power I wrote about doing GOOD as exercising stored up power. This is the essence of a Good Act. Now, doing the RIGHT thing can be more than that, and within that context, we will seek to learn more.

Righteous Free Enterprise and Selfish Ambition

So what is the main principle of this Righteous Free Enterprise? We know we have the right, given by God and therefore inalienable, to keep the FRUIT or PROFIT of our work. But what is the underlying principle that God set-up for us to abide in, that if we follow it, it almost guarantees the effectiveness of this God-created enterprise system?

It is this: We are each expected by God to act in our own BEST interest.

That's it.

If we act in our own BEST interest, we will not just act in our own interest, we will act in our highest and best interest. We will seek to establish WIN-WIN relationships with our customers and our vendors. We will not "profit" at the customer's "expense". When a good or service is traded, we will seek to provide the best good or service for the price paid. We will not in any way short-change the customer, on the contrary we will act as if we have an interest in RETAINING that customer for the long term. We will understand that what we sell, has value and we will seek to provide that value, that benefit, to people in a profitable, hospitable method.

This is Righteous Free Enterprise.

This may sound incredibly obvious to you, but on a DAILY basis, Christians in business are tempted to take an "advantage" that comes their way, that no one but they and God would know about. And when they succumb to the temptation they rationalize it saying to themselves, "you gotta make hay while the sunshines"! or they consider all the times they maybe were taken advantage of and say "My Turn".

The clear thing is this: every time we succumb to temptation to act in our own SELFISH interest (which is what greed is about), we diminish the plan of God and we OPPOSE His plan for our business. This my friend is sin, by definition. Because we profit from it, it is easy to rationalize. But these are ill-gotten gains, as they were once called back in the day. There is no enJOYment in them. And they will NOT store up treasure in heaven. When you profit Righteously it is a TWO-FER. You benefit NOW and you store up Treasure in heaven. It's actually a TWO-FER, TWO-FER, because you and your customer both benefit as well.

It is seems much more difficult and it is more rewarding, to maintain the integrity of Gods system and act in our BEST interest, which will "consider the interest of others as well of our own." (Phil 2:4, " Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." The Holy Bible : New International Version. 1996, c1984 Grand Rapids: Zondervan. )

And: 21 "All of them are seeking their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. "
The Holy Bible : New Revised Standard Version. 1989 (Php 2:21). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.

The intent of God in all aspects of our relationships, is to create win-win. We serve --we are served. We give and it is given to us. We Love because He first loved us.

Of course in order achieve this maturity we must be firmly rooted in God and in the things of God. And we must TRUST in Him with all of our heart, or we will succumb to the temptation to do otherwise.

I know Pastors and Businesspeople who have failed because they hear from God, they discern what he wants them to do, and they grab hold of it and run with it. You've heard it said: God has a plan for your life. "You know the plans I have for you, says the Lord" (jer 29). So when a door opens for you in your church, business or work-life, do you give thanks and say "I've got it now God!"

Or do you seek to do what God has given you to do, GOD'S WAY? Do you seek the detail of the Plan? Do you "acknowledge Him in ALL your ways, so "He will make your path straight"?

Do God's Plan, God's Way. Be just as earnest in seeking the tactics as the strategy.

Righteous Free Enterprise- What is the purpose of money?

Power is ability. The word in the Bible in Greek is dunamis. Dunamis is the word for power, ability, fortitude, enablement, the verb form means "empower" or enable. There are many forms of power. There is physical strength, talent, pursuasiveness (political power), position power, situational power, (the power of opportunity) financial power, intellectual power, knowledge, etc.

But what is the purpose of power? Why does it exist?

Power is ability, and it has energy, or "stored work" in it, that when applied, something happens. Power, therefore, has force, impact. It is an asset.

Where does it come from? It is either bestowed, as a gift, or acquired, through effort.

You know people that are physically "built". You know others who lifted weights to get "built". Both people have physical strength.

You know people who inherited millions, and people who started a company and earned it.

You know of people who could read at age 2 and got all A's and 800's on their SAT's and you know people who busted their tail to make the Dean's list.

All of these people are powerful, they have created situations or are in situations where they have stored energy.

As I said power is either earned or given. The giver is God in both cases. If you are "endowed" with intelligence it came from God. But if you have the "unction" or drive to learn, or the "call", that ALSO is from God. So either way God is the Giver.

But what is the purpose of all this power?

Power only has one purpose-- to use it for Good.

The word Good, agathos in Greek, means beneficial, profitable, generous, beneficent., virtuous.

Mostly power should be used to empower. In other words, power's highest and best use, is to use it to help others to develop their ability, to equip them for their highest and best Good.

So financial power is no different. It is like all other power to be used for GOOD, which means to empower people for THEIR highest and BEST Good. Of course this includes the person who has the power. But as you will find as you pursue this, the law of the "talents" is always in play with our power. Matthew 25: 15-28.

So don't just give, be a good (profitable, beneficial, valuable) empowerer. Use you power, no matter what it is, for the GOOD of others, and you will receive many times more. Rom 2:7-11.

So not only is it RIGHTEOUS to use your power for Good, it is profitable or GOOD for you as well.

Talk about a win-win.

Righteous Free Enterprise and Goodness

No person is good unless Goodness draws him to be so.

No person does something good, unless Goodness that has "turned" him/her to do it.

Even our Goodness comes from God.

Anything else is a apart from real Goodness and a pretense, and not real Goodness at all.

Righteous Free Enterprise and Freedom

Righteous Free Enterprise©

So far we’ve talked about the “righteous” and the “enterprise” aspects of Righteous Free Enterprise. Enterprise is the idea that we are created to work and that work has a great deal to do with forming who we are and building our character. Work is a Godly thing and was first done by God, in the Creation of the Universe. We also have learned that our work has value and that we have the right, which has been given by God, to benefit from our work, to benefit from the fruit of our labor. We own the product of our labor, as a gift from God.

We’ve learned that God created us to work, because working is beneficial to us personally, it helps to learn and grow and mature and working produces supply for us and for others. Because we own the product of our work, we can sell or trade that product, produce or profit, (the extra). This extra is called wealth.

We also briefly touched on the idea that our enterprise or work should be righteous and that righteousness is primarily attained by seeking and doing the will of God in our work. We will obviously get into the idea of Righteous Free Enterprise more and more as we explore this wonderfully rich and glorious plan that God has for us during our brief stint on this wonderful Earth he has provided.

So let’s move on to Freedom.

Freedom- we come into the world free. We are endowed by God with Freedom. The evidence for this is our individuality, which is proven by our unique and free thought. We think, therefore we are free. Because we think freely and without restriction, we can therefore express those thoughts freely as well. We can speak, write, assemble, own property, not be infringed in the way we worship all based on this idea that God created us to be FREE.

How free? Completely. We are free to choose to do what we want. We are completely free, the only restrictions are the ones we impose on ourselves, individually and corporately. No one, not even God, can MAKE you choose to do something you don’t want to do. He can MAKE you DO something, but he can’t make you CHOOSE to do it. THAT, can only come from you; as an exercise of your free-will.

Because we are all free, our freedoms must be protected. Restriction of our freedom is self imposed and should be and is intended, to protect our own freedom and the freedom of others. This is role of morality, and in application, government. Moral Law, also given by God, guides us in the use of our free choice. Moral Law (or governance) provides us with the wisdom and insight we need to use our freedom mutually beneficially which is God’s intention. But moral law is only valuable to us if we choose to follow it.

In general, the freer our enterprise is, the better. If we understand that we exercise our freedom with the intent to also protect the freedom of others, that is, if we have, in our use of our freedom, the understanding that we are all, always free, we will, NEVER use our freedom to infringe or restrict the freedom of others. This is the “self-governance” of a free market.

Righteous Free Enterprise is free, because we are free, and is JUST because if we exercise our freedom with the knowledge that we are all free, we will naturally behave in a manner that protects that freedom for ourselves and each other.

More to come…..

Righteous Free Enterprise- What is Your Economic Worldview?

Do you view the economy as a limited entity with only a certain amount of resources and wealth to go around? Or do you view the economy as limitless, a sea of endless possibilities?

The answer to this question might also indicate how you view God.

Let's consider for a moment how a limited view of the economy represents a limited God. Our view of the economy dictates what we think is possible within it, what is attainable or produceable, what CAN be done. If we say, "hey there's only so much to go around," we are saying that God's ability to provide is limited, and we are saying that all there is what we KNOW of. Or we are saying that God can do anything, but he's only made a certain amount of _______ and so we need to get while the getting is good. What will this view of the economy do to the way we do business? How will it "tempt" us in our business decision-making? In the way we manage and lead? How will we view competition for these "limited resources"?

I submit to you that it affects you a great deal.

And, if you believe God is all-powerful, endless, infinite, all-knowing, omni-present, (among many more), and truly apply that knowledge to your view of the CREATION; if you see the universe, and it's magnificence, and the wonder of a single atom, you just might think about what is possible, differently.

Here's just one example. In the 1970's it was believed that by the end of the century we would OUT OF oil. Now we have developed a process to render crude oil out oil-shale in Canada and with this ONE deposit, (and there is much much yet to discover), we have enough for the next 300 years. It appears that we will replace oil, WAY before we run out of it!!!

Of course GREED is the result of the "limited" view. The worry that we might not get "our fair share" (whatever that is), can cause people to act in their SOLE SELF-INTEREST, which is GREED. You can see why Paul (Col 3:5) refers to Greed as Idolatry, (worshipping someone or thing other than God). In the case of Greed, we are worshipping our SELVES, our SOLE SELF INTEREST. It is ambition of a destructive kind because it seeks to conquor not achieve. It is not ambition that is bad, it is "SELFISH" ambition that is GREED.

In Paul's letter to the Phillipian Church he writes in Chapter 2 : 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

So, give this all some thought and see if you can "widen the view of the economy", and get to know the Author of the universe and see if that affects your view of the world.

The Pastoral Role of the Business Manager

The Pastoral Role of the Business Manager

Introduction-

I minister (or serve) people mostly in the context of their job. I do this in many different ways. But mostly, in whatever I do, I seek to help people to integrate their faith into their employment. I'm not just talking about ethics, or standing up for your faith at work, or evangelizing at work, or talking about God at work, or submitting to Him at work. It's about ALL of that and more. What I try to do is help people to see that God wants dominion or (lordship) over their WHOLE life and that work is no exception. To most people work represents 45-55%[1] of their awake time each week. Work for lots of people is the one place they EXCLUDE God. After all, they say, “I have to make a living” or “You don’t understand Jeff, this is Business.” They compartmentalize it, carving out a NO-GOD zone. As an Entreprenuer friend of mine says, “ We let Jesus ride on the bus, but we don’t let him drive.”

The Business Owner\Executive is placed in a position of authority. A great many people with authority in organizations, and I include some Pastors, look at their jobs as THEIRS. To these people, their work is the last bastion of control, a place where they rule, most times benevolently, but rule none-the-less. This is very significant, because those to whom God has given authority HE has given “legal right” as from a KING. The word in Greek that is translated authority is the word “exousia”. It comes from two words, ek-out from, and ousia= a participle form of TO BE, or being. So when they spoke of Jesus: Mat 7:29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes, they were talking about where his words came from, from the great I AM. So if you are in “authority” you have been placed there by God, to do something “to author” something from HIM.

In addition, to be in authority is different for those of us who call ourselves followers of Jesus: "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. LK 22:25,26

So being “in authority” is not as the world views being in authority. It is a way of “provision”, of giving those being served what they NEED. These needs in the workplace are things like: knowledge, opportunity, autonomy, responsibility, accountability, belonging, appreciation, expectations, standards, consistency, and many many more.

Who is God? Who am I?

These two key questions are appropriate questions to ask in every role in which we find ourselves , ie: in ALL of life. Whether in Political Office, Parenting, Business Management, Ministry, Teaching, in whatsoever your hands have been given to do, these questions form the basis for accurately defining our purpose and our tasks in a position of leadership, be it in a secular or spiritual capacity. Regardless of the riole, we are given a trust, a stewardship. We are after all, managing and leading people. They are not "things" or employees, i.e.: the thing employed or used. We may as well call them "USEE'S" if that were true. These are people we serve, not voters or students (lifeless lumps),or “laity”.

As leaders of people we must ask these two key questions as part of the understanding of the Pastoral Role of the Business Manager. Once we start to answer them, we start to "know God" and ourselves, and we can then fit that understanding into what God has given us authority (legal right to author on HIS behalf) to do.

As business managers, we must ask ourselves some important questions about the nature of God, about who or what God is. Questions like: Is God omniscient ? Does he truly know what is right for all people? Does he have a “purpose” for my business? Does he care about the principles upon which I base my decisions?

Where do we get the wisdom that we constantly ask for? (I hear business people ask for this one thing more than any other.) Whom else should be consulted regarding these big deals, and market opportunities?; How do we decide whether we should downsize or “ride it out”, and who should be hired or laid off? Is God Omni-present? Can we find him at work? Does he care about what we do as leaders of others? Is he present in the Oval Office? Whom do we follow at work as leaders, ourselves or our God? Is Jer 17:5-10 truth or not? All these questions establish a framework for the role of the business manager.

And most importantly we ask: does he have a plan for each of us? We know he wants us all to become MATURE, complete, fully who he created us to become. Is this plan of “maturity” in effect at work?

Who AM I ?

Each person who works, who professes faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior is a child of God. But so is each one who does not profess this faith. Were not all people made in HIS image? Doesn’t God so LOVE the world? If all people are created in God’s image, then it is safe to assume that even the unsaved at work are made that way as well. Does God only have a plan for the saved person’s life? Are not all people created by God to do good works?[2] Sometimes God uses the revelation of that plan to attract people to HIM. Do you as the leader look for and recognize that plan by pointing out the divine intervention HE makes in their lives? Do you point out their natural giftedness and talents as evidence of God in their life? (Where did it come from?)

So if someone is given a place of authority in an organization, those he\she leads, are to be led into God’s plan for their lives, as it pertains to their job. The examples of God meeting people within the context of their work begins with Adam and Eve in the garden. [3] It was their “job” to tend the garden, and it was within that context that God would meet them, and in which they were tempted and fell. Also , God came to Cain and Abel after they had offered up a portion of what their work had produced. [4] Does God involve himself in our work today?

So if a Business Manager leads an unsaved person into God’s plan for their life, what might be the outcome? And the word God need not even be mentioned until an appropriate time. For the evidence of a changed life, contains the power of conversion.

MORE IS EXPECTED

As to those who already are believers, more is expected. A believing business leader must instruct those already believing not only in the fulfillment of their own gifts and talents, but also in the obligation they have to be examples of God’s workmanship. (EPH 2:10). And don’t forget the axiom: to whom much is given, much is required. Luke 12:48

Pastoral Role vs Pastoral Office

Pastoral Office

We see in Ephesians Chapter 4 that the Lord has given some to be Pastors and Teachers. These are people called, in a primary way, to emphasize the spiritual growth and the care of those placed within the church gathering or body. It is a high office of servanthood. Those called to this office are gifted and blessed with special talents and abilities to bring God’s people and the Body of Christ into maturity and completeness.

Pastoral Role

2 Tim 4:5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

Just as Paul writes here to Timothy, I believe it is also possible and quite likely that we are to do the “work of pastoring” when given that place or opportunity. The work of the Pastor, or the function of Pastor is part of many relationships we are involved in, especially in light of the intent of EPH 4.ie: equipping people for works of service towards their maturity.

1. Parent- Child

2. Teacher- Student

3. Manager-Subordinate

In each of the above situations, are we not called to “pastor” those involved? To equip and train them to fulfill themselves in some way? Each one of these relationships takes on the “semblance” of pastoring, because the work of pastoring is being done.

Work is Life-----Life is Work

Now it is true that we are in a business. That is, we are engaged in commerce, the offering of a good or service for sale and subsequent profit. Profit as such, is the outcome or produce of our efforts if you will, and therein lies the key. For the sales and subsequent profit produced by an enterprise to be at all "Godly" they must be looked upon as the outcome or "produce" of work done well vs. the pursuit of profit for its own sake or for self gratification. (Don’t forget Paul called greed-idolatry). [5]Sales and profit in business are evidence of the equipping of the people of that organization, and should be measured against that equipping. Done in this way profit becomes a by-product from helping people to grow. As it is written. Gal 6:9,10 Let us not become weary in doing well , for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

These verses are in the midst of words to the Galations, that are as equally "practical as they are spiritual". As such they are meant to be lived in that manner, in all parts of life. So by them it is evident that God in relationship to our work, is just as interested that we live "rightly" there at work, as he is "at church". (Are we not the church ALL the time?)

Not a compartmentalized life.

How many times has it been said, “You don’t understand, this is business.” There is great desire on the part of some to carve out a section of life and make it a “fiefdom” or little kingdom, where they and only they rule. It is idolatrous to say the least. Those of us in leadership within organizations have the opportunity to walk in the humble truth that God alone places people in positions of authority. To see this authority as a “trust” is hard for some. Rom 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Richard Exley wrote in “The Rhythm of Life- putting life’s priorities in perspective”. He cites four integrated parts to a full and complete life: WORK, REST, WORSHIP AND PLAY.In the section on work he writes: “The second tenet then in our theology of work is: All work is sacred when the worker is in right relationship with the Creator. And the joy of work is its own reward.” The manager’s pastoral function then is to help his\her subordinates to work in right relationship with their Creator, integrating work and faith properly.

The Spiritual Formation of the one Managing.

Stephen Covey in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and “Principle Centered Leadership” has undertaken the task that I am pursuing. Mr. Covey, although not a main stream Christian, has done excellent work in the integration of faith, values and work, especially from a leadership perspective. So much so that his work is required reading at colleges and seminaries in this company. The reason for his effect on the subject of leadership is that he convincingly makes the case that leadership and the principles involved, transcend any position or title, and move towards those important tenets that DEVELOP (or edify)) PEOPLE . Of course his belief is that any development that occurs within a certain context, i.e.: work, will for the most part be APPLIED in that context. Therein lies the relevance of his habit #4- Think Win-Win.

It is because Mr. Covey’s work deals with the person of the manager that it is so successful in my opinion. In fact he does to his readers what he asks them to do for their subordinates.

The Consummate Leader

Regardless of the position, or title, if you want to know the consummate leader you have but only one place to look....The Gospels.

Jesus, is given by God as both the perfect follower and the perfect leader at one and the same time. As the perfect leader practices a single, simple, powerful principle: He discerns what people need to grow, and provides it.

Time and again he would explain what he wanted his followers to know; to this he would provide a demonstration of his teaching through an act of healing or wonder or sign; to this he would ad an illustration via parable. All the while he would vary his style or presentation to “fit” the people he was trying to reach. To the leper he gave compassion and healing. To the Pharisees he was confrontative and combative. To each he was what they needed him to be, in order for them to walk out their maturity. In short he had the ability to meet people where they were, intellectually, spiritually, cognitively or emotionally.

You might say, “But he was God. You don’t expect that of me?”

I say, I don’t expect it , God does. John 14:12-14 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Now, does this mean we can perform the signs and miracles also? I believe that if we need them, we will have them. But it is a big IF. The vast majority of the time, we have what we need to lead the ones we lead, especially within the context of work. But don’t lose sight of the fact that EQUIPPING people for works of service (or better said: service’s work) is the task of leadership in ALL parts of life. For life includes work, and work is part of life. There are no boundaries except those we impose.

The concept of "first follower" or Follow me as I follow Christ.

More than anything else, the example of the Leader is the template for the people of the organization. To the degree that example is authentic, and not “manufactured” it is most powerful. The main evidence for leadership, is followership. Leaders in all walks of life, have the burden of example, the most important of which are honesty i.e.: say what you truthfully think, and intergrity ie: what is said is what is done.

PSEUDO (counterfeit)-LEADERSHIP is the illusion or packaging of perfection. It is a pretense. I have found that people respond at a gut level, to the reality of the organization. If the Pastor or Parent, or Teacher, or Manager exemplifies, and demonstrates the qualities needed for growth, then by and large the people in the organization will also. By that I don’t mean be perfect so they will be perfect. I mean for example, that if you want your people to own up to their mistakes, own up to yours.

What is the outcome of the Manager as “Pastor”?

Effective Ethics

The first benefit I will discuss is called Effective Ethics. That is, as people work and as they seek to do their work in concordance with the timeless values of God, there develops, naturally, a system of ethics that are extremely productive. In short, people end up doing the job well and RIGHT. So the need for a policy manual is diminished, and the workplace can be broken down into values and principles that endure and apply over all. For example if I as a Business Manager maintain and apply the principle imbedded in the Golden Rule, I will affect not only the people I impact with that principle, but the organization will maintain honest and fair relationships with the people (or “stakeholders”-a la Covey) it does business with ie: customers, vendors, government agencies, investors. As these values or principles are assimiliated a great many ethical questions are answered, AND excellence at work will be achieved.

Unity of the Faith

Another benefit to the manager and to the organization (company) is that there will be a unity, loyalty and synergy, that would be hardpressed to manufacture. Stephen Covey calls it the 6th Habit --Synergize.

It is the same idea expressed in EPH chapter 4: ........until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ........Eph 4:16 From him the whole body, (organisim) joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. When people are led to a place of maturity within the context of their job, and when this maturity is allowed to manifest fully, the need for leadership and therefore the manager diminishes. In fact the best definition of managing I have ever heard is: Managing is that which if you do it well, you don’t have to do it. So the CONTROL that so many strive for exists by the fact that work occurs, plans are executed, excellence achieved, without anyone “hovering” and GOD gets the glory. As people attain to a whole measure of fullness at work, excellence happens. So “team building” exercises are not necessary, as well as “diversity training”, and “outward bound experiences”. Work becomes a JOYful place. A place where, work worth doing is done right.

Righteous Free Enterprise©

Open the Bible to the Book of Genesis (which means Beginning) and read through the first 2 chapters. God, placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. After He had created the Earth, the animals and plants and all living things. He looked at His creation and noticed that there was "no man to work the ground". So he created Adam, and then Eve, his "helper". He placed them there to "work and keep" the Garden.

Hmmmm, Work and Keep. These are two very powerful words which were given to the first two people. The first word is work. They were to work. Mankind, Adam and Eve, Male and Female, You and I are CREATED to WORK. After all God himself works thereby providing us an example. His main work is CREATION. He also has a PLAN for His entire Creation, a plan of which the purpose is to give that creation the opportunity to KNOW Him. He is "working the plan" everyday. He also has created a PLAN for YOUR life and he works that plan everyday too.

The second thing God told Adam and Eve to do was this: God told them to "keep" the Garden. This word means sustain, take care of, (it also means to obey as in a "trust"- "I'm trusting you with this assignment."), treat it with the respect that comes from it being a creation itself, and a gift of God to Man (Adam).

The next thing that happened in the garden was that God, after giving them the above instructions, told them something that is amazingly powerful. God said, "You may eat from any tree in the garden..."

Notice what is happening here? First He CREATED them to WORK and KEEP the Garden. Then God gave mankind the RIGHT (YOU MAY) to participate in what mankind produced.

Do you see this? God, in HIS wisdom gives us ownership over what our work produces. He permits us to PROFIT from the product of our labor. So the idea of profit, the cliche' is "the fruit of our labor" (now we know where that comes from), comes from God. He set it up that way!!! It is an Eternal Truth, not a BAD thing at all!! Notice God said to them in Genesis, "you may eat from any tree (or bush) except the one in the middle of the Garden. If you eat from the tree in the middle of the Garden you shall die. "

So it isn't a free ride, there are PROFITS that are OFF BASE. ALL profit, or produce, is NOT GOOD. There are ways of PROFITING that are NOT GOOD for us.

But this powerful understanding that the RIGHT to profit from our labor, comes directly from the Creator of the UNIVERSE!!!

And work is not only necessary or required, it is GOOD, because God is Good and HE works too even today!!

Here's a question for you: What do we owe God for this opportunity?? What do you owe him?

Is Free Enterprise Righteous?

Is Free Enterprise, Righteous?

Have you noticed the condescending, maligning way in which the subject of “business” is discussed? Have you noticed that business executives as portrayed in Hollywood movies are almost always, aggressive, unfeeling, evil-minded, scheming, etc…..? Have you ever noticed the negative way people talk about the people who own or operate the companies they work in?

If all this is true, and there is truth in all these opinions because no reputation goes entirely unearned, then how can we possibly think that Free Enterprise, this greed-based system we have here, came from God? The short answer is, it didn’t. It came from evil. This greed based system is evil. Evil’s main characteristic is that it opposes God. As you reflect on the reputation of “big business” or business in general, being profiteers, gaining at the expense of those less fortunate, ask yourself if these practices are FOR or AGAINST God? The answer seems pretty obvious, they are against God.

Now, is this how things were intended? Is this just the nature of business? Of course not. If you remember an earlier posting about the Beginning or Genesis account you will note that God gave Man the RIGHT to partake of the fruit of Man’s labor. This PROFIT or PRODUCT is a fundamental condition of the way God designed work. We produce, we work as we are created to do AND we get to keep what our hands have made. Since the right to do this comes from God, we need to see that everything we have COMES FROM HIM. We can trade what we earn for other people’s goods, or services, or for $100 bill, or a whole stack of them. This is how God set it all up and we’ve been doing it this way ever since it began a long time ago.

The corruption we see today and have always seen, is a result of SIN. Man’s Sin is primarily greed, or selfishness, which places serving SELF as the only goal. As such Greed is the setting up of “another God” a replacement God. The theological term for this is idolatry, or idol worship. Whenever we put something before God, we practice the sin of Idolatry. Since greed does this de facto, greed is idolatry. Since evil opposes God, and greed is the worship of self, you can see that greed is evil, because it excludes God and opposes Him.

It’s true that God set this system up for our material benefit, so we would create wealth, so we can provide for our needs, so we could be fed, clothed and sheltered, and, so we could help those who are less fortunate.

What God wants is for us is to use his system of working, and profiting in a way that does the MOST Good; Good for us, Good for our families and Good for those in need. This is the point of it. When we work, we profit. And if we are smart with what we earn we can create more of it. This “excess” is called WEALTH. In the Old Testament, in the book of Deuteronomy, which means “Second Law”, in Chapter 8, we learn that it is GOD who gives the power to make wealth. This excess that we can produce by our intelligent use of what God has given us the right to keep, is called wealth. Wealth is stored up economic POWER. And as we shall learn, the purpose of power is EMPOWERMENT.

So if we set our minds and hearts on work, and use what we earn intelligently we will have power, economic power. And if we understand that this economic power is meant to be an empowerment for those outside of ourselves, we can see that God set up a system whereby “there will be no poor among you.” A world where we receive and give, FREELY.

THIS is Righteous Free Enterprise! And if everyone practiced it, the world would be a very different place than it is today.

WHAT is Righteous Free Enterprise©

What is Righteous Free Enterprise© ?

The three words that comprise this system that the God of the Universe endowed us with are an important place to start.

Righteousness is that which Christ commands us to SEEK in our pursuit of our material needs, saying “First, seek His Kingdom and His Righteousness.”,… Matthews Gospel, from the chapter (#6 as part of the Sermon on the Mount) about the futility of worry. The seeking of RIGHTEOUSNESS ensures our provision. So then what is Righteousness? Righteousness is outward behavior that follows and is informed by understanding and wisdom. By seeking Righteousness we come to KNOW. By meditation we come to UNDERSTAND, which is WISDOM. By acting on this understanding we are RIGHTEOUS. We DO what is RIGHT.

Now, Righteousness is the ACTIVE WILL of God in our lives, and is insurance against becoming WISE in our own eyes. By seeking righteousness, God reveals his Will for our lives, by meditating and seeking counsel about what we learn, through prayer, fasting, and Scripture, we come to UNDERSTAND that will or desire that God has for us, and when we DO it, we are being RIGHTEOUS.

“So, then how does this help me run my business?”, you might ask.

Simply, it virtually guarantees that you will do the right thing. (You may not have the knowledge that you are doing the right thing, but in retrospect it will be revealed as such, if you follow God’s plan for Righteous Free Enterprise.) And if God ordained that we work, and that He has a plan for our lives (Jeremiah 29), then seeking that plan is the path to everything we NEED!

Does God care about how you manage your business? Of course !!! Isn’t work about 60% of your awake time?? Why would God remove His will from that big a CHUNK of your life? But many many Business Owners, Executives and Managers take their business life and run as fast as they can AWAY from God’s influence, “securing” it for their OWN will. This is of course a HUGE sin (being out of the will of God), and down-right arrogant.

So Righteousness IS the will of God for your Business Life. If you DO the Will of God, it IS Righteous.

In the next installment we will discuss Freedom and Enterprise.

Until next time…..
